CHAPTER TEN

I wake up with a gross headache and a tongue tasting like rotten sugar and tar.

“Oh, you dumb bitch,” I groan, rolling over to bury my face in my pillow.

My flailing hand finds no sign of my phone, because of course I left it in my jeans pocket when I took them off in the middle of the kitchen.

I let loose a long and low moan the stuffing can’t muffle and is not anywhere near a sexy type of moan. It’s a moan of suffering and darkness. I’m dramatic when hungover.

Getting up is an ordeal, but I manage. It’s dark outside, which helps because light right now would not be great for this headache. Finding my pants right where I left them, I drag my phone out and check the time. 4am.

“Holy crapola. I slept a while.”

The first of many glasses of water slides down my throat, and then I go and get dressed. I’m up, might as well make the most of it. Which, in my current state, involves doing some deliberate and quiet yoga and drinking more water, along with a banana. Bananas are the best. I send Kelsey a text in the hopes of having someone to whine too before remembering the time difference.

After all that’s over I check my phone for any calls from Ulysses. There aren’t any, which isn’t shocking. He was probably relieved to find I wasn’t there, draped over his couch like a temptress or something. I bet he breathed a sigh of relief and drank some scotch and looked at the photos of his ex-fiance.

Shit.

I walk to Mabel’s, the cold air helping to sooth my temples. The headache isn’t so bad now, but it’s nagging and wants to hang on. The early morning sunlight on the snow makes me wish I’d brought my sunglasses. I had no idea snow was so bright. “Go away,” I grumble in a futile attempt to bow nature to my will.

“Hello, dear. How are you doing?” Mabel asks as I settle myself into what I now think of as my chair, right in the middle of the whole diner.

“Hungover. Bacon and eggs and your most blackest of black coffee, please.”

“Oh no! Have a fun night, at least?” She winks at me.

“Not in the tiniest slightest bit.”

“That’s too bad. I’m sorry, hun. Breakfast is coming right up.”

I rest my forehead in my hands and stare at the table, and when the bell rings I don’t bother to look up. Not until a familiar voice breaks the quiet silence of a morning in a diner.

“This mine?”

Ulysses. I jerk my head up, which my eyes object to, and pin him with a look. He doesn’t seem in any way perturbed, upset, or angry. His eyes drift to me, and he dips his head a fraction of an inch. He just nodded in greeting. I almost fall into the stereotype of letting my jaw drop, but catch it in time. As far as he knows, I got bored and left.

I send him my casual wave, and he turns to leave with his brown bag of breakfast.
